If you’re seeking information about a powerful tool hosted by Dynamics 365 that can streamline your document routing processes you’ve come to the right place. The Document Routing Agent tool can empower your organization with the capabilities to efficiently distribute, track, and manage business documents through D365 Finance and Supply Chain. Today, we will explore basic functionality and some setup tips on the Document Routing Agent. This blog can be beneficial whether you’re a D365 F&O user, administrator, or developer.
Configuring Document Routing Agent
- Download the Agent: Within D365 you can find the installer on the Manage network printers page (Organization administration > Setup > Network printers). Be sure the version corresponds with your D365 version or complications could occur!
- Installation: You must install the document routing agent on a local desktop/server. After installation has completed, you need to setup your agent instance using the settings tab on the toolbar.
- Printers: The printers that are installed on the local desktop/server, the same location where you installed the document routing agent should all appear within the printers but on the DRA toolbar. Be sure to select the right printers!
- Testing and Validation: Test the document routing agent to ensure it is functioning correctly. Verify that it can communicate with your D365 environment and process documents as expected. A good way to do this is by printing a test page (See below screenshot)

Client VS Windows Setup for Document Routing Agent
- Client: Installing involves applying the DRA client directly on a client machine. It is typically used when you want to set up routing for a limited number of users or if you have specific client machines that handle document routing tasks.
- When installing and setting up document routing agent, you would want to go the normal route of giving the azure information needed for set up while leaving the run as windows service option unchecked.
- This will run it against your client machine and use Adobe Reader to spool the documents.
- Windows: Installing involves applying the DRA on a central windows server or workstation within the organization’s network. This is for scenarios where you want to centralize the document routing process and handle documents from multiple client machines or applications. Typically used for large number of users who route using multiple systems.
- When installing and setting up document routing agent, you would want to go the normal route of giving the azure information needed for set up while checking the run as windows service option.
- Be sure windows service is setup and the DRA service is under your admin/service account.
Tips and Tricks
- Modifications to the document routing agent code base can act different depending on how it is setup (Client/Windows). Be sure to test changes against the setup you plan to do on your production environment.
- Be sure to set up DRA on every legal entity.
