Plan and Consolidate Your Transfer Orders Using the Outbound Load Planning Workbench in Dynamics 365

The Outbound Load Planning Workbench provides a powerful solution for organizations looking to streamline shipping operations and reduce freight costs. For companies that frequently generate intercompany transfer orders, managing outbound shipments can become complex and expensive—especially when each completed transfer journal triggers the creation of a new freight shipment. By leveraging the Load Planning Workbench, businesses can consolidate multiple transfer orders into a single load, optimizing logistics and cutting unnecessary expenses.

To illustrate, consider the following scenario: Two transfer orders are scheduled to ship on July 22nd, both originating from the same facility but heading to different destinations. Rather than generating two separate loads, the Load Planning Workbench allows you to combine them into one consolidated shipment. This approach not only simplifies outbound planning but also enhances efficiency across your supply chain.

First, we will use two transfer orders shipping from warehouse 51. The first transfer order will be shipping to warehouse 41. The second transfer order will be shipping to warehouse 24.

Once the transfer orders have been created, navigate to the Outbound load planning workbench. Warehouse management > Loads > Outbound load planning workbench

Filter for the ship date for both transfer orders, July 22nd

Select Supply and demand > Add > To new load

Select the appropriate Load template ID for both loads

Select the new load id that was created. Release drop down select “Release to warehouse”

Next, navigate to the load. View the work details by navigating to Loads > Related information > Work

Complete all related work.

Once all related work has been completed, confirm the Outbound shipment.

Once shipment has been confirmed, each transfer order will be moved to a shipped status. Once the material has been shipped and delivered to the appropriate warehouse, the transfer orders can be received. To do this, navigate to each transfer order, select the “Receive” option under the Receive fast tab.

The transfer order will move into a Received status indicating that the order is complete and has been fulfilled.

The outbound load planning workbench also offers tools to plan and build routes to optimize delivery of materials.  In the next section we will detail how the load planning workbench can be used to determine the most efficient routes for shipments.
