Financial Reporting in Dynamics 365 without Management Reporter, Eventually

The future of financial reporting in Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations might be officially moving past Management Reporter, at least in the long-term vision. In a session at the Dynamics 365 User Group Summit in Nashville, Muhammad Alam (General Manager of D365 for Finance and Operations) mentioned that it is not a question of “if” Power BI will replace Management Reporter and its descendants, but “when.” He also said that immediate changes for replacement are planned, and the user community will hear about a full “migration plan” when the time comes.

Regardless, with the constantly improving CFO Overview workspace and embedded Power BI; users are gaining more capabilities and visibility with each release. The new tools have a focus on analytical financial reporting for internal consumption, meaning greater detail and ability to drill down for additional information. For now, Management Reporter and Financial Reporting will still be supported in AX 2012 and D365 respectively as the main tools for statutory financial reports.

Though the fall release (7.3) makes some great strides in the analytical realm, it should almost be considered just a preview of what is to come.

The long-term goal is parity with Management Reporter, but until then Microsoft has promised continued support for MR. Check out the full video below to see some of the new reporting features from the fall release in action:
